The Film Fan
March 27th 2008 01:08
I love my life, I work as a cook and I write, I have three kids a husband and acreage out of town to control, deal with and I love it all. I also love the escapism offered by film and to this end, I am somewhat specific and also possibly random in what I like to see.
Below you will find my personal film manifesto, as I think of it. What are yours?
I LIKE:
Special FX films
Blockbusters
Low Budget
Films that have been made from books (but more later)
Disaster movies
Comedies
Thrillers
Some Horrors ('I am Legend' as opposed to 'Halloween')
Serial films (think Harry Potter, LOTR, The Bourne series, and color me happy the Indiana Jones movies.)
I DO NOT like:
Drama (I don't choose to see them but if I'm dragged, I do usually enjoy them)
Movies with subtitles (I'm too tired...remember the three kids?)
Most animated kids movies ('Ice Age' I liked alot,'Robots' I wanted to euthanase myself. Or sleep.)
Documentaries (see Drama)
Nicole Kidman's acting ( to be clear I think I like her, I just don't like her roles)
There's really not much, I don't like but when I don't like it, you'd be hard put changing my mind. I can, however, remain mostly objective when it comes to reviewing. Just try me.
I BELIEVE
That there are movies that don't work in the cinema, but do work on the couch.
That it is normal to have a movie and watch it over and over again, like when you were a kid, just because you like it.
That movies made from books should not be parallel to the book...they are two different forms of storytelling and therefore should be two different stories.
That going to the movies is a very expensive experience and so I want to get my money's worth.
That I'd make a brilliant casting agent, and that many, many films get it really, really wrong.
That there is nothing wrong with going to see a movie by yourself.
This is just the tip of the iceberg, really, I could spend all day doing this. But instead I choose to stop here for reflection. And for a sandwich. And maybe to watch 'Terminator 3' which I've never gotten around to, and which I fear may not meet the standards of the first two. Talk soon.
