The Lovely Mrs Jackman (LINK)
April 16th 2008 07:59
Given an opportunity to have my dream dinner party, there is no denying that, like many hotblooded Aussie women, I would certainly have a place set for Hugh Jackman. Wouldn't he be fun? He sings, he dances, he's funny and pretty as a picture. Especially with his X-Men arms and chest all done up the way they are at the moment. Mmmmmmm. Sorry. I would be terribly disappointed, however, if he did not bring his very lovely wife Deborrah Lee Furness. In fact, I think I've had a crush on her for longer than I've even been aware of Hugh. She has flown under the radar really as an Australian actress, which seems to me to be a bit of a shame - cut to a very bad segue to one of her early films, let me know if you get my joke.
Really Long Link
In Shame, Deborrah was our hero. She was attractive without being pretty, and she was a tough chick with a brittle centre. As Asta, she said and did all the things that you wish you could as a defenceless girl walking past rude boys at a bus-stop.
Cheese to Shame's chalk (I'm on fire tonight!) Deborrah also plays the completely opposite role in another of my personal favorites Waiting, where her City girl role is spot on and (probably unintended) great comedy. Seeing her in both roles is an excellent overview of the woman's range. And while Waiting is certainly not to everyone's taste (the Strine dialogue is as subtle as a hammer hit), it was somewhat underrated. It would probably have a better audience today - although it works well as a fishbowl of the changes brought about by the 80's in Australia.
It seems to me that Australian film has been such a male dominated industry, that any films with female leads have been sidestepped unless there was a catchy bloke's name up top of the cast of characters. I'm sure that Deborrah loves looking after the kids and travelling around the world with her husband. Wouldn't we all love being married to Hugh. But I have no doubt her substance as an actor and director would bring me to the box office.
Yep, she can come to dinner any time.
