THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE (2010): Toothy Triangle

In the atmospheric original Twilight (2008) there was the epic first love story, teenage angst and Bella uncovering the mystery of vampire lore; New Moon (2009) explored the pain of heartbreak, the budding relationship between Bella and Jacob and introduced the werewolves and vampire aristocracy, the Volturi. This installment suffers for its middle-child status, and has more focus on action and less scope for emotional impact. There are however several cringe-worthy conversations about feelings from all involved. You have been warned.
The hordes of Twihard fans eagerly anticipating the third installment of the Twilight saga, directed by David Slade (vampire-seasoned after 30 Days of Night), should be satisfied with Eclipse’s lingering emphasis on the supernatural love triangle between vampire Edward (Robert Pattinson), the werewolf Jacob (Taylor Lautner) and an attractive and strong-willed, albeit awkward brunette teenager Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart). Decisions, decisions, what will it be, teeth and fur or teeth and sparkles?
Bella’s nemesis, Victoria (portrayed by Bryce Dallas Howard replacing Rachelle Lefevre) is back with a vengeance, having recruited Riley (Xavier Samuel, exploring the “dashing tool” territory) and created an army of newbie vampires to fight the Cullen clan in order to avenge the death of her mate James...which occurred in the first Twilight film. Someone is clearly having trouble letting go. The Volturi, led by spiteful Jane (Dakota Fanning), don’t have much to do here but skulk and sneer while observing the action from the sidelines.
There is also some flashback exploration of the history behind the werewolf/vampire animosity and the background of Cullen clan members Jasper (Jackson Rathbone) and Rosalie (Nikki Reed). Aside from these brief plot digressions, all the attention is on the shirtless performance of Taylor’s abs. Which is not a bad thing, by any means.
“I am hotter than you” says Jacob to Edward. It is difficult not to concur (see visual evidence attached). Especially considering what Bella has to go through - i.e. turning herself into a bloodthirsty monster with an unflattering eye-colour – in order to finally consummate her passion for Edward, who, to top it all off, demands her hand in marriage first! Well, he better be all that, if it’s going to be for all eternity. If not, all she will be able to do is…bite him.
Following in the footsteps of another successful franchise, the Harry Potter movies, the last of Stephenie Meyer’s books in the saga, Breaking Dawn, has been divided into two installments, which will be gracing the screens everywhere in 2011 & 2012. Maybe, after all this brooding and cringing, Bella will be able to finally update her long-suffering father (Billy Burke) on her virginity status…until then, for an alternative to chaste panting, try True Blood.
